Law #9 - Each day drink one ounce of very cold water for every 10 calories of your basal metabolic rate

Number of ounces to drink per day = BMR/10

Since you have a BMR of 3150, you need to drink 3150/31.5 = 315 ounces of very cold water each day.

This is equivalent to 2.46 gallons. The U.S army has released guidelines for army personnel, that they drink a maximum of 12 quarts per day. This is equivalent to 3 gallons per day. All those internet articles talking about getting hyponatremia (water intoxication) are based on extreme examples of drinking 2-3 gallons in a short period of time, coupled with yet other extreme condition, such as running a marathon for hours without stopping to go to the bathroom after drinking many gallons of water. Another extreme example is hazing at a fraternity, where one person died after being coerced into drinking many gallons of water over a period of several hours without rest in cold weather.

With my water intake recommendations for extreme fat loss through thermogenesis, the worst thing that will happen to you is that you'll be going to the bathroom quite often, so hyponatremia won't be a consideration. With that said, please consult a physician before superhydrading yourself with my water intake recommendations, especially if you're using diuretics or have a kidney disorder.

Water is actually one of the best thermogenic agents around, because when you drink very cold water, your body is forced to heat that water to body temperature: 98.6 degrees fahrenheit. One study showed that drinking just 1/2 liter (16.9 ounces) of very cold water raised a person's metabolism by up to 30% for up to 40 minutes.

You don't need the study to confirm that water will do this. Based on the laws of thermodynamics (energy in = energy out; energy can't be created nor destroyed, but only converted; areas of hot will travel to areas of cool and vice-versa), and the definition that a calorie is defined as the energy required to heat 1 gram of water 1 degrees celsius:

98.6 degrees fahrenheit = 37 degress celsius. 36 degrees fahrenheit = 2.22 degrees celcius. So the water is raised ~ 35 degrees celsius.

Example: You have a BMR of 3150 drinking 315 ounces of ice water each day.

Converting ounces to water to grams: 315 ounces water = 315 ounces*28.5grams/ounce = (315)(28.5) grams of water.

8977.5 grams * 35 degrees celsius = (8977.5)(35) kilo calories ~ [(1/1000)(8977.5)(35)] Calories = 314.21 Calories ~ 315 calories ~ 1/10 BMR.

It follows that it takes one calorie to heat one ounce of water from 36 degrees fahrenheit to 98.6 degrees fahrenheit.

My water intake recommendations will cause you to burn an extra 1/10 BMR so you'll lose an extra 315 calories per day, while not having to eat less and not having to exercise.

Try not to drink anything that has calories in it, except for protein shakes and non-fat or 1% low fat milk. An exception is on your cheat day, when you can have anything ((if you're over 21 years old, keep alcohol to 2 standard drinks or less (12 oz beer / 5 oz wine / 1 1/2 oz hard alcohol)). So other than very cold water, you can have very cold diet soda, or sugarless iced tea, or sugarless/creamless iced coffee. However, keep in mind to use just a little of these other beverages because they contain caffeine, and you may also be using about 400 milligrams of caffeine per day from fat loss pills. Try to stick with water, unless you're having a protein shake, then you can have a little non-fat or 1% fat milk.

A few tips are:

  1. Make sure you get most of your water intake for the day done by dinner time so that you aren't constantly waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.

  2. Use an insulated 32 oz container, such as a thermos to keep the water chilled, or buy a 2 gallon insulated jug, and transfer the water to a smaller insulated glass when it is time to drink.

  3. You may have heard not to drink liquid with your meals, as it can dilute your stomach acids. I've also heard that isn't true. I'd conclude that it isn't true, because that I know that I feel thirsty when I'm eating. If it wasn't beneficial for my body to drink while eating, my brain would not be telling me to drink!!!

  4. Try to drink 1/10 of the total amount you're supposed to drink each day (31.5 ounces) each time you drink, and spread it out evenly in 10 periods throughout the day. One study has showed that if you drink too little at any one time, that the metabolism didn't show a noticeable increase.

  5. Your body has a system for regulating water in your body. You won't get bloated drinking a lot of water. Any excess will be eliminated in the bathroom.

Keeping yourself ultra hydrated will have other benefits, such as helping to keep you feeling satieted (some of your cravings you thought were for food were actually feelings of thirst) and to help make sure you don't go catabolic. Dehydrated muscles are more easily broken down, and there have been studies showing that your metabolic rate actually goes down by 2-3 percent when you are dehydrated.
